In March 2012 we published the TB Report "The new criteria for the distribution of TV rights to Serie A" (in Italian) in which we analyzed the regulations contained within Article 19 of the Serie A Legue Statute and tried to make a simulation of the value of the rights for every football team.
With the season 2012/2013 entered into force the new three-year contract, which leads to an increase of available resources by 866 million euros last season, up to 1,006 million Euro of the season 2014/2015.
We proceed now to an update of the analysis for the teams participating in the championship series in 2012/2013. At this work has participated with comments and suggestions also Donato Biancosino, who we thank for his interest and availability.
For the season 2012/2013 the amount to be distributed is 966 million Euro. Without the contribution for the relegated teams, the net figure is 950 million.
Criteria used for analysis
Referring to the aforementioned report, we repeat only briefly the generla criteria: having identified the total amount received (ER = "Economic Resources") you will first deduct the contributions to relegated Club: it is, for each team, a sum of € 5 million for the first year and € 2.5 million for the second year (these figures are halved if the company has only played one year in Serie A).
The amount that remains is in fact called "Net Economic Resources" (shortened in "REN") and is distributed on the basis of three different macro-criteria:
The analysis criteria and sources of information are almost always the same as used in March, apart form one exception that the criterion B1 (number of supporters) and a correction for criterion C3 (historical results) – made thanks to Donato Biancosino.
The criterion B1 (supporters analysis) was based on the latest findings of the Gazzetta dello Sport, dating back to March 2012, in which evidence was given of the results of the opinion poll commissioned by the Football League in November 2011.
The criterion B2 (resident population) did not change, but the data has been updated to ISTAT survey of March 2012, the latest available. The entrance of the three teams brings a significant increase of the total population represented by those teams in Serie A (Turin, Genoa and Pescara entered, while Cesena, Lecce and Novara left), and because the score is given as a percentage of the total, this means that the newly promoted (especially Torino and Sampdoria) REN erode share from other teams.
The criteria C1 (results of the season), C2 (results of the previous five years) and C3 (historical results from 1946/47) have changed according to the updating of values for the teams and the changed sample. Even in this case the return in Series A of two teams that have a palmares relegated to the upper attracts shares REN that are subtracted to the other.
We should mention that in the report the criterion C3 was correctly stated but then, during the calculation, applied incorrectly.
Article. 19 (c3) of the Statute, in fact, states that "each club of Serie A is therefore given a percentage of the share historical results corresponding to the ratio between the score attributed to the company on the basis of the above, and the total scores (1 to 20) of all companies in Serie A": therefore you should first create the table with the ranking history, then assign a score from 1 to 20 and on the basis of this score attribute REN. In the previous calculation the award was not made on the score, but on the percentage of each team on the total number of the teams in the sample.
